Healthy Eating

Message 1

Eat where you want... but make healthier choices, just like Kim Kardashian

An easy way to become healthier is to make better choices. Even when you're eating fast food you can still find healthier options than the typical burger and fries. Many fast food restaurants have added things such as grilled foods, salads, fruits and yogurts to the menus as well as offering juice, milk, and water as an alternative to soda.

This is classical conditioning because it pairs eating healthy with looking or being like Kim Kardashian who is not only attractive but a major celebrity with influence.

Message 2

The vitamins in certain foods can improve mood and energy levels. Eating healthier such as adding dark green leafy vegetables to your diet can alleviate irritability and boost your mood. Along with these vegetables, bright fruits can improve your mental health and improve memory.

This is classical conditioning because it pairs eating healthy with being happy. This is persuasive because everyone wants to be happy, and knowing that eating healthy can cause happiness will influence the audience.

Message 3

STOP and PAY ATTENTION it't just what you eat, the hidden calories and sugar in drinks can sneak up on you and wreak havock on your health!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is an example of intensity because it informs people using fear by explaining that even certain drinks can be unhealthy and cause weight gain.

Message 4

DIET AND EXERCISE WILL HELP YOU BE HEALTHIER AND HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT. DIET AND EXERCISE WILL HELP YOU BE HEALTHIER AND HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT. DIET AND EXERCISE WILL HELP YOU BE HEALTHIER AND HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT. DIET AND EXERCISE WILL HELP YOU BE HEALTHIER AND HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT. DIET AND EXERCISE WILL HELP YOU BE HEALTHIER AND HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT. DIET AND EXERCISE WILL HELP YOU BE HEALTHIER AND HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT.

This is an example of repitition because it explains over and over that one of the most effective ways of loosing weight and becomming a healthier person is to eat healthy.

Message 5

During televisions shows messages would flash about eating more fruits and vegetables as well as cutting sugary drinks and junk food out of your diet. In addition it could flash pictures of fruits and vegetables causing people to not just feel more hungary but to become hungary for healthier foods.

This would be an effective subliminal message because it had already been proving that already hungry people can be made hungrier by subliminal messages. By adding in things like fruits and vegetabls to make the person hungry for healthy food it will help to get people to eat healthier.

Message 6

Oprah says: "I think everyone should embrace the lifestyle of eating healthier foods and taking better care of themselves to ensure a longer happier life."

Oprah is a good choice for a credible communicator because she is well known, trust worthy, has a loyal following, and knows first hand what it is like to struggle with weight loss. Even though shes had ups and downs with weight loss it makes her relatable and likable to the audience. The audience can see that she genuinely wants to be healthy and cares about others health as well.

Message 7

Josh Peck says: "Eating healthier helped to change my life because I can be more active, and by starting at a young age I don't have to worry about potential health problems in my future. If I can do it, I know anyone else can."

Josh Peck has expertise on changing his life style for the better in order to loose weight and become a healthier indiviudal. He can help to reach children by sharing his own story, as how he as an over weight kid decided to turn his life around, and embrace a healthier eating and exercise.

Ad Campaigns
In the effort to lower America's collective weight, getting told to shape up seems to have extended to a federal government anti-obesity campaign. Last year, the Centers for Disease Control launched a multimedia advertising blitz aimed at getting children to become more active, carrying the theme "Verb, it's what you do."
Criticized for being too vague and ineffective, campaign creators Saatchi & Saatchi have added $68.4 million to the $125 million price tag and have developed more direct suggestions to exercise-shy U.S. children. One print ad, for example, shows children playing volleyball and includes the words "Get out, go play."
Meanwhile, Florida Governor Jeb Bush has appointed a task force to study how to bring down obesity levels in his state. With 60% of Floridians overweight, and obesity rates in all age categories increasing, citizens of Florida are becoming as round as their famous oranges. Less than 26% of Florida adults eat the daily recommended five servings of fruits and vegetables, with around the same amount categorized as physically inactive. The task force will pay particular attention to high-school age children, one quarter of whom are, or at risk of becoming, overweight.

Junk Food Tax
The Congressional Budget Office estimated in December that a tax of 3 cents on every 12-ounce can of soda would raise $50 billion over 10 years. Not surprisingly, a soda tax is among the revenue streams being eyed as U.S. lawmakers tackle healthcare reform.
About 58 percent of Americans are willing to bear a tax increase of 1 percent or more to support healthcare reform, according to a recent Thomson Reuters survey.
Although a debate rages over the efficacy of taxes on soda and other items, supporters point to the fall in smoking rates after taxes sent cigarette prices soaring.
"The research around tobacco has shown that large increases on taxes on cigarettes has been the single most effective policy to reduce tobacco use," said Mary Story, a dietitian and public health professor at the University of Minnesota.
Story figures that a 10 percent increase in sugar-sweetened beverage prices could cut consumption by 8 percent to 10 percent.

Increase Pysical Activity = Increase Calories Burned
Understanding how many calories you burn on a daily basis will help you understand how many calories you should be eating in order to maintain this equal balance of "calories in" versus "calories out."
Everyone burns a different amount of calories each day. Things such as age, activity level, medications, medical conditions, and genetics play a role in the number of calories a person can burn. Some of these factors you cannot control -- age being the most obvious. However, there are a number of other things that you have direct control over.
Experts agree that one of the most important things that you can do to prevent obesity is to increase physical activity.

For example:

If you normally... Try this instead!
Park as close as possible to the store Park farther away
Let the dog out back Take the dog for a walk
Take the elevator Take the stairs
Have lunch delivered Walk to pick up lunch
Relax while the kids play Get involved in their activity

Technological Fixes for Obesity

Surgery:
GASTRIC BYPASS
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RGB):
This operation is the most common gastric bypass surgery performed in the U.S. First, a small stomach pouch is created by stapling part of the stomach together or by vertical banding. This limits how much food you can eat. Next, a Y-shaped section of the small intestine is attached to the pouch to allow food to bypass the duodenum as well as the first portion of the jejunum. This causes reduced calorie and nutrient absorption. This procedure can now be done with a laparoscope (a thin telescope-like instrument for viewing inside the abdomen) in some people. This involves using small incisions and generally has a more rapid recovery time.
Extensive gastric bypass (biliopancreatic diversion): In this more complicated gastric bypass operation, the lower portion of the stomach is removed. The small pouch that remains is connected directly to the final segment of the small intestine, thus completely bypassing both the duodenum and jejunum. Although this procedure successfully promotes weight loss, it is not as widely used because of the high risk for nutritional deficiencies.
Gastric bypass surgery that causes malabsorption and restricts food intake produces more weight loss than restriction operations, which only decrease food intake. People who have bypass surgery generally lose two-thirds of their excess weight within two years.

LAP BAND
How It Works
The LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding System is a simple yet advanced gastric banding system that helps you gradually lose and control your weight by reducing the amount of food that your stomach can hold at one time. Allergan is the pioneer of adjustable gastric banding in the United States - this is a constantly evolving technology, involving a great deal of research and development. (click here for the History of the LAP-BAND® System)
The name "LAP-BAND" comes from the minimally invasive surgical technique used (laparoscopy) and the silicone gastric band placed around the top of the upper part of your stomach. The LAP-BAND® System works by helping you control your food intake and supporting long term, sustainable weight loss.

LIPOSUCTION
What Is Liposuction?
Many Americans have only a vague concept of what liposuction is. Simply put, liposuction is the surgical removal of fat cells through a stainless steel suction tube called a cannula. Liposuction was first performed in 1974 and was a tremendous improvement over previous surgical body contouring techniques. There have been many advances in liposuction procedures over the last few decades, making it one of the safest and most popular body contouring surgeries in the world.
Often used in conjunction with other plastic surgery techniques, liposuction removes pockets of fat from troublesome areas such as the thighs, hips, abdomen, and upper arms. Liposuction procedures vary depending on what your ultimate cosmetic goal is, and whether you are combining liposuction with other plastic surgery procedures. To learn more about liposuction, read the sections below.

Diet Pills
Diet drugs have come a long way since the addictive amphetamines of the 1950s. And while each new generation of skinny pills has so far proven more dangerous than effective — remember fen-phen and ephedra? — experts continue their search for a safe diet pill that works. But while these pills offer hope for trimming America's ever-expanding waistline, experts caution that there's no miracle potion out there to automatically shrink you back into your college jeans. "These diet drugs work only if you also change your lifestyle, and that means following the same old advice of dieting and exercising," says Caroline Apovian, M.D., of the Nutrition and Weight Management Center at Boston University Medical Center. The medications also come with some real health risks, ranging from nausea and diarrhea to hypertension and depression.
